What does it take to work at
YMCA Camp Duncan?

YMCA Camp Duncan provides excellent opportunities for those wishing to have a meaningful summer of growth, service, fellowship and fun. Located in northern Lake County Illinois, Camp Duncan has provided significant outdoor experiences for young people since 1921.

For a college student, summer "vacation" is a prized commodity. It is a break from school, an opportunity for unique adventures, and a chance to gather experience in a career-related field.  Your decision regarding a summer experience is an important decision.

Our staff team works together to provide meaningful camp programs, which develop the camper in body, mind and spirit.  It takes a special kind of person to serve be a "professional" role model.  Camp Duncan requires staff with the following qualities:

  • A COMMITMENT TO WORKING WITH CHILDREN -
The staff at Camp Duncan is committed to serving the needs of all campers.  Staff is the key ingredient to a child's camping experience. The camping experience is a tool in the development of a child's self confidence, independence, sense of responsibility, and an ability to relate to others.  A staff sensitive to these needs is extremely important.
  • ENDURANCE -
Working at a summer camp can be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life, but also one of the hardest jobs you will ever have!  A staff which thrives on working with children 55 to 72 hours per week is required.  Time off is equivalent to 24 hours each week and a night off every other week.
  • A DESIRE TO WORK IN A CHRISTIAN ENVIRONMENT -
Few summer job experiences can be as meaningful and supportive as working in a caring, outreaching Christian environment.  Camp Duncan uses Christ's example of unconditional love as a basis for this environment.  There are cabin devotionals, Challenger Program to help you grow in your faith and a sense of fellowship which touches everyone - staff as well as campers.  As a staff member, you will have the opportunity to be a role model to our campers.
  • OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE -
Those who enjoy being outdoors will love Camp Duncan.  We are especially looking for people with strong outdoor skills, however, we do offer training in this area.
  • A BELIEF IN PERSONAL WELLNESS -
One's full self-development includes that of the body.  At Camp Duncan this calls for an absence from smoking, drinking, and drugs while at camp.
