YMCA Camp Duncan has, since 1923,
offered a transformative camping experience that promises no less than these
life-affirming benefits:
- The opportunity to bond with caring
counselors and staff who model core YMCA values of honesty, caring, respect and
responsibility.
The assurance of making life-long
friends.
The prospect of achieving goals once
thought impossible.
The chance to be accepted as you are
and learn form others.
The adventure of getting to know
people from diverse cultures and countries.
The joy of communing with nature and
learning how to protect the natural world.
These are benefits that last a
lifetime, according to board member Mrs. Ellen Sorensen, who served with her husband and
camp director, Peter Sorensen, from 1933 to 1966.
"Camping isnt just a
childhood experience thats forgotten once its over. For many children,
Camp Duncan becomes like a second home. After all these years, I still get calls from West
side boys who are the Camps oldest alumni, talking about how prominently their
camping years figures in their lives. Then and now, Camp Duncan builds spirit, mind, and
body while giving children the time and space to dream their dreams."

Art Catrambone, an eight year old
camper in 1938 can still recall how he marveled at the night sky so full of bright stars.
Art believes that with the help of alumni and the community, Camp Duncans influence
can continue to reverberate into the next century.
"Its essential that we preserve Camp Duncan. By doing so, we can broaden the
impact its natural-world setting character-building programming can offer families and
communities. The more we
improve the facility and enhance programs, the better we can meet the resident camping,
day care, day camp and conferencing needs of both our local community and the metropolitan
area."
